Solar photovoltaic electricity

A solar photovoltaic (PV) system uses solar cells to convert light energy from the sun into electricity. Solar PV systems fall into two basic system categories:

  • ‘on-grid’ systems that allow any surplus electricity that is generated to be exported to the electricity distribution grid; and
  • ‘off-grid’ systems that use batteries to store the electrical power generated for use when needed.
  • some systems combine on-grid and off-grid arrangements.

To guide you through these, the National Skills Academy have recently produced a series of consumer guides.
