External_wall_insulation.jpgExternal wall insulation

Approximately 33% of the heat that is lost from an uninsulated home is lost through the external walls.

Where a house is built using a two skin 'cavity' wall construction the most common approach is to fill the cavity. However, some types of cavity construction are not suitable for filling and some older homes were built using a solid external wall construction method - where this applies there is an option to fix sheets of insulation either internally or externally to the other property walls.

To guide you through these, the National Skills Academy have recently produced a series of consumer guides.
