Biomass fuelled systems are generally considered to be carbon neutral and extremely carbon friendly when compared to fossil fuelled appliances. This is because the carbon dioxide released during the combustion process is broadly equivalent to the carbon dioxide that was absorbed during the tree growing process.

A range of biomass appliances are available including stoves and boilers. Fuel options include logs, wood pellets and wood chips. These are referred to as solid biomass fuel.

To guide you through these, the National Skills Academy have recently produced a series of consumer guides.
